Privacy Please

Growing up with only one sister was both a blessing and a curse. It was great because I never had to share a room, had my own bathroom, and sharing was never an issue. Because of that though I grew up very private and always felt weird if someone was in the same area when I was changing or going to the bathroom.

I remember growing up and using a public bathroom. I was in the stall and a little kid climbed under the door. I was humiliated! I was sitting there trying to do my business and felt completely violated. To this day, I still hate using public bathrooms because of this.

College was a fun experience for me too. When I first moved away I had lived with a family that I knew and was able to experience, slightly, what life would be like to have younger siblings and slowing lost that whole privacy issue. I mean for the most part it wasn’t like anyone was walking in on me in the bathroom or while I was getting ready, but I would be in bed and someone would just walk in to get clothes or something from my room. It was a completely new thing for me.

When I finally got roommates, I always made sure that I got my own room. I was always willing to pay more so that I had my own room and at times I would even pay extra for my own bathroom. I didn’t care, I didn’t want to share and didn’t want to lose my privacy.

Well, once I got married and had a child this all changed real quick. I have to close the door when I am in the bathroom and suddenly a little hand will poke around, the door will open, and in comes the cutest little smiling boy. How do I freak out about that? I don’t! I just learn that I have finally joined the club where privacy is non-existent and that people are going to start walking in at the most inconvenient times.

But let it be known, I will still try my hardest to keep some kind of privacy as long as I can.
