Party Time

Growing up, one of my favorite books ever was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The story of a caterpillar that eats and eats and eats, gets fat, sleeps for two weeks, then turns into a beautiful butterfly.

Isn’t that just the best story you’ve ever heard in your whole life? Kind of a dream if you ask me. Well, my wife, being the creative genius that she is, took this favorite book of ours and turned it into our son’s first birthday party.

birthday party entrance When you first walked into the house we had this sign of colored polka dots celebrating our son’s first birthday.

photo 1Walking into the party room you were welcomed with this great banner. My wife took some fun patterned fabrics, torn them into strips, and tied them onto twine to make this super full banner.

photo 5We bought this frame from IKEA and every month my wife gets super fun and creative by changing what’s in there. She changes it up with fabrics, and little drawings that she does. So for his birthday month she did these polka dots and the number one.

photo 4The food was fun because the caterpillar eats everything! So we had everything that he eats in the book. (Not all shown- we had pizza, cheese, watermelon, salad and the hit of the party…PICKLES.) We tried to get a picture but with the craziness of the party only got the before which looked a lot like the after- empty plates.

The little detailed cards for the food made is super fun and cute.

photo 1I loved his birthday cake. We had previously made a smash cake, but wanted a little something to have candles to blow out.

photo 4We had to get a family pic with the birthday boy. He was the happiest kid ever and loved every minute celebrating with everyone.

photo 5Finishing it all off, we had to make sure he made his wishes and blew out his candles. What’s a party without blowing out candles?

photo 3And at the end of the party, my wife had found these cute sketch pads at Target in the dollar section. Then filled these goodie bags with crayons, rubber balls and candy, just a few of our son’s favorite things.

So think about your child’s favorite things, books, games or movies and get crazy creative from there.  You like many Pinterest parents will have the most creative, unique parties around. I think we enjoy doing it more than they do, but it’s really fun and worth it when it’s all said and done.
