Book Review – David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

At the beginning of this year I decided that I was going to read more; and they can’t be my usual books (basically anything about a celebrity or the Kardashians).

For Christmas, my brother-in-law had drawn my name. He asked everyone what he should get me that I would like, but he didn’t want to do my usual gift…clothes!

When I opened it and saw that there was a book I was wondering if I had opened the wrong gift. I don’t read real books. He had told me that this book, David and Goliath Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, was by one of his favorite authors, Malcolm Gladwell.

::this didn't seem like my type of book. don't judge a book by it's cover::

He hadn’t read it before, but he had heard that is was a good one and that he felt that I would really enjoy it. “Ummmmm do you know anything about me”, I thought. “I really don’t read books, but I guess I can try this one out.”

I decided that I was going to try and read a book a month this year. This was going to be my first.

I am super ADD and OCD (self diagnosed of course), so I have to keep myself busy when I’m reading. Otherwise I get bored, fall asleep, or don’t find time to read. I know that the only way that I will read is if I go to the gym and read while on the machines: elliptical, bike, arc, etc.

This book hooked me in from the very beginning.  Story after story, chapter after chapter. I couldn’t put it down, but I could only workout for so long. The nice thing is though, when I find a great book, I tend to do so much more cardio.

I have never done a book review, because I never read books and I don’t want to give away anything about this, but know this: BEST BOOK EVER!!!

I loved how the each chapter made you think about different things about life that could happen. Malcolm also teaches you something new about things you think you already know everything about, while making it interesting. For example, when he talks about the actual story of David and Goliath he talks about how Goliath had some kind of a tumor in his brain. This is what had caused him to be incredibly large. Then it also made it so that his vision was off making it hard for him to even see David. It was so interesting all that he talked about and he did this throughout the whole book.

For my birthday (in January) my mother-in-law gave me The Boys in the Boat. I have been trying my hardest to get in the gym and read it. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes and if you have any books that you think I should read let me know. After having the experience with David and Goliath I feel like I can be open to many more great books.
